Recently, something on Twitter caught my eye. A true story about a young woman whose life had taken an utterly terrifying and brutal turn when she was just eighteen years old. NAalley – a fantastic site about everything New Adult, put their heads together to figure out a way to help and they came up with a charity auction. Scores of people stepped forward to donate. From Tablets to books, computer software to swag, even agent critiques and one-on-one phone calls, so many wonderful items have been donated. Before you go check out the auction, here’s Queena’s story. It’s brutal, scary, and heart wrenching to read, but Queena lived through this. She still lives through it, fighting each and every day. Take a moment:
Back in 2008, Queena was a vibrant eighteen-year-old with her whole life ahead of her. That changed the night she was brutally raped, beaten, and left for dead after dropping books off at her local library. The attack left her blind and unable to walk or talk, requiring around-the-clock care.
This month marks not only the seventh year since Queena’s attack, but also her twenty-fifth birthday. Now, she can communicate by widening her eyes, smiling, and clenching her fists. Every day, she fights her way through intensive, sometimes experimental, therapies that add up to over $70,000 a year. Together, we can change this real life “New Adult” story by stepping in to help ease her family’s financial burden—and have a good time doing it!
The auction is running from now until Friday 6pm EDT. You can check it out here. There are over one hundred items for readers and writers.
